Trydeepwork is a site designed to use the principles of Cal Newport's book Deep Work to... well, help you do deep work!
What can I beemind with Trydeepwork?
The integration tracks the number of sessions or the number of hours of deep work you've tracked on Trydeepwork. Each day it will fetch the amount you've done as of today, and update your graph.
How do I set up a username on Trydeepwork so I can use it with Beeminder?
Once you're logged in on Trydeepwork.com, you can go to your profile and set your username there.
If you can't remember the username you've set previously, you can find it there.
My session isn't showing up!
One thing we've been finding is that sometimes users forget to save their session on Trydeepwork's side after they finish. Until you've done that, Beeminder can't pick it up because Trydeepwork only records a session properly once it's saved (and otherwise it's lost), so definitely make sure to save each session!
Can I edit my datapoints to reflect time I didn't record in Trydeepwork?
Nope! Although we don't edit your datapoints as we do with some other integrations, Trydeepwork goals are Odometer goals, so we pull in the cumulative total each time. If you try to add time to Beeminder that isn't already included in your Trydeepwork account, the next time we grab your cumulative total from Trydeepwork, it won't include the extra time you were trying to add on our side.
Imagine you had done 19 hours in Trydeepwork, so the cumulative datapoint Beeminder pulls through is 19 hours. You can edit that to say 20 hours, to include an hour of work outside Trydeepwork... but the next time we fetch data from Trydeepwork, for example at your goal's deadline, or the next day, it'll pull through the datapoint of 19 hours again, meaning you won't get credit.
That means there's no way to add sessions that you didn't track through Trydeepwork in the first place, unless they add something on their side to make that possible, so don't forget to start your timers and save your session at the end.
Trydeepwork sample goal setup
- Head to create a new goal.
- Click Trydeepwork icon to start a new goal using Trydeepwork data.
- Enter your Trydeepwork username, and then you can add the amount you want to commit to, using units of either number of hours or number of sessions. Here I've picked "hours", so my goal will be tracked in terms of the time I spend on it. I've also selected the option to "Start this goal with extra leeway", so that I don't need to start immediately. I've given myself four days of buffer, and that gives me four days before I need to complete my first hour of deep work.
- Next, you need to give your goal a name, and you can also add a brief goal description.
- Finally, choose your initial pledge. This is the amount you will pay the first time you derail on the goal. After derailing, the pledge will increase by default — use the dropdown below to control how high it goes by selecting the cap. In the example below, I have chosen to start at a $5 pledge, which will increase each time I derail, until it reaches $270 — the pledge cap. (To read more about pledges and payments, check out some FAQs!)
If you want to start out with a sort of trial period, you can choose to start the goal at $0. If you do that, the pledge will automatically increase to $5 after seven days. If you derail before that, it will also increase to $5.
- And that's it! Step through the preview and confirmation screens, and your graph will be created. I have four days to read 30 pages, or I'll have to pay $5!
